Cassandra Cerasia (RWU class of 2023) will be off to a Ph.D. program at University of Rhode Island in the Fall of 2023. Cass is a triple major in Marine Biology, Aquaculture and Aquarium Science, and Chemistry with a minor in Professional Writing. She is the current president of our chapter of the Biology Honors Society (BBB) here at RWU and on the e-board of the Science Alliance. She has worked in the Molecular Longevity Lab for the previous 2.5 years where she pioneered the use of a new model organism for aging studies and has presented her research at regional and national conferences. Cass will be joining the lab of Dr. Jonathan Puritz to study how humans affect the evolution of marine populations. The goal of her project will be to investigate how hypoxia, coastal acidification, and low salinity levels shape population connectivity and microevolution in the eastern oyster. The project will involve oyster exposures in the lab, exome capture, and next generation sequencing to identify genetic and cellular mechanisms that shape the response of these oysters to environmental changes caused by human industry. Wishing Cass the best of luck in her new adventure!
